Significant Milestones in Oil Production Technology

There have been significant changes in technology in the production of oil since its first production as you will read more here. Because of its importance in our lives, it is best if we take a look at the changes that have taken place since it was discovered. In the past, in Ancient Mesopotamia bitumen a hardened substance was used in ship construction and holding jewelry together. In Egypt, it was used to solidify the famous pyramids. These minerals which oozed to the surface freely requiring no extraction equipment led to the discovery of oil.

The technique used to obtain oil on its discovery was by simply digging. At the time, oil was used as medicine and the Chinese also lit their lamps as well as warm their houses using this product. Little information about oil existence was available at the time as you have seen in this site.

The next advancement in technology came in form of spring poles. This apparatus which was connected to a tree was made popular by the Ruffner brothers with the intention of reaching more salt deeper in the earth. Oil was still not the primary goal but the people believed it could serve several purposes. However when steam power was introduced, the brothers were able to drill salt at a faster rate. Benjamin Silliman a chemist at Yale learned more about processes that could convert the oil into kerosene that could then be used in lamps. After the discovery by Benjamin, there was more interest in this product and commercial extraction could be seen as you’ll see here.

From this website, you will read more about how the need for oil increased significantly. Following the demand; there was an increase in the number of oil fields that were discovered. However there were hard sediments that made drilling difficult hence the need for improved equipment. Consequently, a method called rotary drilling emerged whose head could move past the hard sediment with great ease. One historic moment was witnessed in Texas where a rig in Beaumont struck oil and it rose to the surface trickling like rain water. Because the world was getting ready for the first war, the need for oil skyrocketed leading to the development of better oil tools as a result of competition. The greatest achievement for the rotary drill was the ability to reach greater depths that the spring pole wouldn’t.

At the moment as we learn more here, rotary rigs are still in use for extracting oil. However, they are advanced technologically as they are fitted with digital tracking devices, touchpads and video control to monitor and access the rigs from a fur. As you will see here, the rigs are enhanced compared to the past. An instance, is the ability of a rig to move on its own as well to extract oil from a number of fields.
